My advice is,first of all you have to know what you want to do with a digicam.High quality images or Hobey images?
there is a jungle of digicams today.I choose one from my demands I want to make macro snaps on small things and want to use as easy like a child. You do not have to be a engineer to handle it.Memory cards are cheep now.A SD card 1GB can store large number of images. 3 to 5 mega pixels and 10 X optical zoom and build in flash rechargeable batteries (Double set) is the good combination if you can get for that money.I am not living in India but if I convert prices here, then it should be possible to find a good cam.Brand is not very important all kind of electronic stuff is made in china or korea with same components, which mean some time you pay more for the STAMP. Good Luck !

Best of luck.
Go for Sony. For your amaturish use 4-5 pixels will do. Don't be bogged down with the parrot-like versions of the sales persons.
They hide so many things.

I would suggest Canon. You can choose either a 4MP or 5MP with 3x Optical Zoom. Dont consider Digital Zoom. You can search all the details in these sites:
http://www.steves-digicams.com
http://www.dpreview.com
Just visit these sites and you can read the reviews and see your camera within your budget
