I have a lot of parking tickets and a couple other traffic tickets like driving without a liscense and parking in a handicap spot. I probably have about $2000 in fines, all of them are minor traffic offences.

Would filing for bankruptcy eliminate these fines? And how long does it take to establish credit after filing for bankruptcy?

The short answer, No. You can't file for traffic tickets, and if you could you would have to have more than 2K worth. Now with the new bankruptcy laws, it is harder than ever to file. You can't even file even if you were thousands in consumer debt.

The best way to eliminate the tickets, is to go down to make payment arrangements with the court. If the tickets are now in warrant status, there is a law that if you go in voluntarily to make arrangements to take care of the tickets, they cannot arrest you, because of your good faith efforts. Pay them according to you payment schedule and as the "good book" says, " go and sin no more".Good luck.

Civil fines (traffic tickets) are not dischargable through bankruptcy.

Filing for bankruptcy with under $20,000 in debt is not very wise anyway, as it can cost several hundred dollars to file for Chapter 7.

Take the advice from the previous responders, contact the court and see if they will arrange payment options. This works here in Michigan also.

$2.000 worth of debt is not enough to justify filing for bankruptcy .. creates more problems than it solves.

Also ... just FYI ... your drivers license can be suspended for failure to pay these. In fact, you can even be arrested (you would be taken in, booked, and then probably released, with a court date) for failure to pay in some communities.

Go work out some kind of payment plan.

No, and it establishing your credit again would be a long and arduous process. Stay the hell out of handicapped parking places and grow up!

i think it would elimate parking tickets, but if you ahve income, they will be after it to help pay off creditors, and they could reposses stuff you own. its not worth it for $2,000, they trouble it causes after.

...just one advice for you...

Always stay away from being a debtor to persons or the law, you'll always remember that your next income is not yours
