Wash it thoroughly every day and put clean water in. Once a week disinfect it with a pet safe disinfectant.

There is no real way that you can stop it from occuring. But you can get rid of it by giving the bird bath a good scrub it should come off relativly easily. I find that an old toothbrush does the trick very well. Give it a go

I have a bird bath in my garden which is very busy with visiting king parrots, rosellas, magpies, wattle birds, honey eaters and sparrows. I have to top it up daily or empty it and fill it daily. Mine also has green slimy stuff but I use a pot scrubbing brush (on handle) to clean it whenever it gets too slippery. The warm weather requires scrubbing more often. Don't use any detergents or other cleaning agents or you'll spoil it for the birds.
The green stuff is harmless.

You have to clean it!!
buy a brush at the supermarket the one you use in the kitchen with a long handle & scrub the bird bath & then rinse
It's easy that way!!

Give it a good cleaning first -- then from now on you need to change the water more often.
