My kitty (almost 5 months) was neutered yesterday. When I brought him home he was extremely hyper and destructive. After about 6 hours he calmed down and slept. Today he hasn't done anything but sleep. Usually he gets up every few hours to play for awhile, but today he hasn't played much at all, and has been sleeping for the last 8+ hours. Also, when I try to wake him up, he just goes right back to sleep, he can't seem to stay awake. Do I have anything to worry about? It just seems odd that he went from so energetic to so sleepy in such a short amount of time. Thanks!

He's been eating and eliminating fine. Also, he was a bit agressive towards me yesterday (which is odd because he's a Ragdoll) but today he's been purring. Maybe he's fine and I'm worried for nothing?

When he came home he was still full of drugs and was feeling grrrrreat.
Today he is sleeping off the rest of the anesthetic. He is fine, just leave him be. Don't keep waking the poor thing up. Just make sure there is food and water for him.

When I got my kitty spayed, she actually had to stay at the Vet for a couple of days because she didn't react well to the anestetic. When we got her home, she peed in a different pair of shoes every morning for a week. She WAS pregnant at the time, but because she was a skinny kitty no matter how much we fed her, the kittens would have killed her.

Anyway, all cats react differently to surgery, just like people. Give him a couple of days to recover, but call your vet just to be sure. He'll be all right, he's just waiting for the drugs to wear off a little more before he's bak to normal. Keep an eye on him, but don't keep waking him up. He needs his rest.

Good luck.

He has NO clue that he had surgery so he may have come home and was so happy that he totally overdid it and now realizes that he does not feel quite right. He should be resting for a couple days after surgery, so I would not be too concerned that he is sleeping alot. He probably still has some of the anesthesia in his system as well that might be making him groggy.

phoebe has a good answer, call the vet and ask. It will keep you from worrying so much!!

Wanting to sleep alot is very common after surgery. And reactions to anesthesia vary between cats. I had one boy that was back to normal before I even got him home,, another who scared the hell outta me by laying around like he was at death's door for 2-3 days. My grey gal was so slow getting the medications out of her system that she was still under the meds (pupils fully dilated and freaked at any sound-not safe to be released by any means) 24 hrs after surgery. And they had used half the usual dose since she was small!!

Your first answerer is right on- call the vet and describe exactly how your guy was active and then snowed. You did good for him by having him neutered-do good for yourself and ask the vet so you won't be worried or second guessing.

When he came home, he probably was feeling no pain yet. Now your kitty is probably a little sore and sleep is his best remedy. My cat was the same way. After a couple days he shouldn't be so sore, but it will start itching and kitty will start trying to lick at it and/or rubbing himself on the floor. My cat would do that and stare me down. I didn't know whether to run, laugh or hug him. (I should have run!) If you are really concerned it wouldn't hurt to call your vet and let him know what going on.

He can probably smell a female cat on heat, normal behavior, it kinda does sound like there in pain but there not, oh and if you don't want some person to have an unplanned pregnancy keep your man inside as he will go find her. I have a man come around my place and howl his head off for my girl, so yeah dont worry.

Your best bet is call the vet who fixed him and describe your kitty's behavior. Ask also what type anesthesia was given and then look it up in the internet (after-effects and so on). When I brought one of my cats home from dental surgery, he acted most strange too and gave me a fright. I stayed up all night keeping watch over my cat and first thing in th morning, I called the vet and asked them about it. They helped me understand what was going on and some of the possible after-effects of the particular anaesthetic they gave. After talking to them, I felt a bit more reassured and felt even better when my cat returned to his normal self around mid-day.

unless he seems very sick or uncomfortable, give it two or so more days. it really takes a while for the anesthesia to wear all the way off, especially when an animal is that young. my dog acted really weird--similar to what you describe--for the couple of days after she was spayed. if he acts like he's in pain, or if he develops more serious symptoms, take him back to the vet. but otherwise i'm sure it will be okay and he'll get back to normal soon.

Its probably just the after effects of the aneasthesia. Keep an eye on the kitty and don't worry too much. Call your vet and explain the behviour to him. He'll be able to give the best advice.

thats what happened when i brought my kitten home from being fixed! Its probably just his reaction to the anestetics they use for the operation! My kitten Lola slept the entire day of the operation and i had to wake her up to get her to eat and drink and then she slept for most of the next 2 days! I wouldn't worry about it... i mean hey, us humans aren't too normal after surgery either! Good luck with you little buddy!
