Charging interest (Usury):

Judaism: In traditional Jewish law it is forbidden to charge interest upon loans made to other Jews. However, Jews are not forbidden to charge interest on transactions with non-Jews, or Gentiles. Given this double standard, Gentile debtors may have been quick to lay charges of usury against Jewish money-lenders charging even nominal interest or fees. Thus, historically attacks on usury have often been linked to anti-semitic rhetoric, as, for example, in The Merchant of Venice. (okay to charge to others)

Christianity: In 1745, the Catholic teaching on usury was expressed by Pope Benedict XIV in his VIX Pervenit, which strictly forbids the practice as such, although he adds that "entirely just and legitimate reasons arise to demand something over and above the amount due on the contract" .(lamens term Usury is okay as long as you have a contract)

Islam: Usury, indeed, interest of any kind, is forbidden in Islam. (Muslims do not charge or take interest)

I am a muslim so I try to answer only about charging interest according to our holy Qur'an.In Surah 2 Al Baqarah (female cow)
verse 275 quote :People who eat riba (charging interest of a loan) can not standing up normally but like someone who drunk or entered his/her body by satan or crazy.He/she told that sale and purchase is the same with riba meanwhile Allah has spoken that sell and purchase is permitted as halal (can be done without sin)People who eat riba after this verse announced, will be the inhabitants of hell and they will live eternal.
Verse 276 Allah abolished riba and fertilized paying donations or alms.Allah hates the unbelievers and who always do sins.
Verse 277 people who have strong faith did good doings
,prayed to Allah ,paid islamic taxes or zakat will get rewards from Allah .They are not worried and they are not sorrowful.
Verse 278 hey all people who have strong faith please devotion to Allah and left riba as a proof of high faith.
According to its interpretation there are 2 kinds of riba i.e (1) nasi-ah riba and (2)fadhl.riba Nasi-ah riba is a payment more than its nominal amount of the loan as prerequisite of the lender .Fadhl riba is a more quantity in an exchange of a same kind of goods such as gold or silver or grain as prerequisite of the exchanger
..Riba in those verses is nasi-ah riba which is prohibited because its interest rate is much bigger than its normal rate in the society in the era of jahiliyah (unbelievers)

Just because Muslims aren't allowed to charge interest doesn't mean that they don't. They couldn't be involved in international finance as they are if they didn't since charging interest on loans, etc. is the basis of capitalism. One ought to ask what is so wrong with charging interest on a loan if the borrower agrees to the conditions? Christianity previously prohibited usury holding it to be against the principle of Christian charity, but lending money as a business is quite different from giving charity as an act of kindness. It would be wrong to charge someone interest on charity, but lending money is a horse of a different color altogether. Also, just because Islam forbids usury doesn't imply that it is the true religion, which I take to be the implication of your question. Charging interest may be against the teachings of Islam, but it is perfectly all right to spread Islam by war and use of force. Not to mention many other morally objectionable practices.

As a Jew, I agree with you. Not all adhere to the laws of the religion, jsut as there are others in other religions who do not follow what they are supposed to either. If the world was ideal, you and I both would live peacefully as neighbors in Netanya, I would give you a new prayer rug for your birthday, and you would bring the brisket to my Seder, whle we both praised our God for the same reasons, albeait in different ways. OF course, since you are Muslim, and a woman, I would never do such a thing without being friends first with your husband, or family, and have their approval first.

edit: salaam aleikum, my friend. May peace one day cross all of our paths, and put an end to this conflict that has endured for far too many centuries....

and ho ho, down there, check yourself on the histroy of the Levant. In partucular whatthe land was called before the Caesar Tiberias, and then AFTER him....Dont forget we are ALL middle easterners too.....The Philistines, however, we not true residents of the area.

yep. its a very judeo-centric aspect of jewish law. the rationale is that jews are family, and you do not charge your own brother for interest. its pretty unfair.

"judaism and usuary go hand in hand. judaism will not survive without usuary and enslaving. according to the torah the non jews can be used for all sort of things. a jew can use a non jew for prostition and all the other lusts. the torah strictly forbids a jew harming another jew. but a non jew is worth nothing and can be killed, raped and so on. this is happening all the time in the zionist state of israel. (stolen land from the arabs)"

three specific commandments from the torah in dealing with non-jews:
To love the stranger (Deut. 10:19)
Not to wrong the stranger in speech (Ex. 22:20)
Not to wrong the stranger in buying or selling (Ex. 22:20)

My Muslim friends in Canada live by that fact - they go so far as not to open bank accounts that collect interest.

But the retirment account he collects interest saying, he will use it just to pay taxes.

As Christian - Give to everyone who asks, if you require their cloak as collateral, give it back by night, otherwise you are wicked. - Jesus taught love, before legalities
