It should not be taken continuously more than 4 months and other details are as follows:
Atarax is an antihistamine used to relieve the symptoms of common anxiety and tension and, in combination with other medications, to treat anxiety that results from physical illness. It also relieves itching from allergic reactions and can be used as a sedative before and after general anesthesia. Antihistamines work by decreasing the effects of histamine, a chemical the body releases that narrows air passages in the lungs and contributes to inflammation. Antihistamines reduce itching and swelling and dry up secretions from the nose, eyes, and throat.
Atarax is not intended for long-term use (more than 4 months). Your doctor should re-evaluate the prescription periodically.
Drowsiness, the most common side effect of Atarax, is usually temporary and may disappear in a few days or when dosage is reduced. Other side effects include dry mouth, twitches, tremors, and convulsions. The last two usually occur with higher than recommended doses of Atarax.
Atarax increases the effects of drugs that depress the activity of the central nervous system Atarax may increase the effects of alcohol. Avoid alcohol while taking this medication.

Atarax side effect
Let me begin this by saying no doctor told me that Atarax was definitely the cause of my recent problem. But it is an anticholergenic drug and they have been known to cause an ileus.
New Year's night I was admitted to the hospital with a possible ileus. I was in severe pain and had to have a tube run down my throat into my stomach to take the liquids and gas out of my colon. It was severely distended. On the ultrasound it appeared to be blocked. I spent all of the weekend there on i.v's.
The only meds I take are elmiron, atarax, and davorcet. My dr. and I decided on the davorcet because it is not an opoid drug that can lead to problems with constipation. Plus I can't take them because of other side effects which I dislike.
After some research I discovered that Atarax isn't recommended for a long period of time. I've been on this for two years.
Anyway, I thought it was worth passing this along to anyone using this drug so that you can ask your dr. about side effects.

in simple terms, it can be taken for anxiety or itching, like any other medicine it has some side effects too, but if you are taking it for hives, you will probably not take it for long, talk to your doctor if you experience symptoms that can not be explained, good luck
