While in exile, Kunti, mother of the Pandavas often advised her sons that they share everything they have (or obtain) equally amongst themselves. During that time, Arjuna attended Draupadi's swayamvara and won her hand in marriage. When he returned, he triumphantly declared "Look mother, what I have brought!". Kunti, unmindful of what Arjuna was referring to, unassumingly asked her son to share whatever it is with his brothers. Thus, in order to obey their mother's order all five accepted Draupadi as their wife.
According to another source, when Sage Vyasa visits the family, he explains to Draupadi that her unique position as the wife of five brothers results from a certain incident in her previous birth. She had in that lifetime prayed to Lord Shiva to grant her a husband with five desired qualities. Lord Shiva, pleased with her devotion, tells her that it is very difficult to get a husband with all five qualities that she desired. But she sticks to her ground and asks for the same. Then Lord Shiva grants her wish saying that she would get the same in her next birth. Hence she gets married to five brothers each who represents a given quality.
Despite her five husbands, Draupadi didn't had any children. Parikshit, grandson of Subhadra and Arjuna, was the sole Kuru dynast who survived at the end of the epic.

Namaste, Jassie, one good question again. The significance of Draupadi having five husband is really heavy and important. It could have several explanations and I like the one given by Panneerselva s. However, when I read the text, I saw that not one husband among those five (whether they are symbols or not) are helping her out when she is taken as a slave after the disastrous dice game Yudhishtira lost. Not one! It is her cousin Krishna who from far away helps her out and makes her sari be endlessly long. I never believed that polyandry was practiced in ancient India or among Hindus. This episode is due to a mistake : see the good anwer you have received about that. Poor Draupadi!

DRAUPADI. Daughter of Draupada, king of Panchala, and wife of the five Pandu princes. Draupadi was a damsel of dark complexion but of great beauty, "as radiant and graceful as if she had descended from the city of the gods."
Her hand was sought by many princes, and so her father determined to hold a swayamvara and allow her to exercise her own choice in the selection of a husband. The swayamvara was proclaimed, and princes assembled from all parts to contend in the lists for the hand of the princess; for although in such contests the lady was entitled to exercise her swayamvara or own choice, it generally followed that the champion of the arena became her husband. Most astonishing feats of arms were performed, but Arjuna outshone all by his marvellous use of the bow, and he became the selected bridegroom.
When the five brothers returned to the house where their mother, Kunti, was staying, they told her that they had made a great acquisition, and she told them to share it among them. These words raised a great difficulty, for if they could not be adroitly evaded they must be obeyed. The sage Vyasa settled the matter by saying, "The destiny of Draupadi has already been declared by the gods; let her become the wife of all the brethren." So she became their common wife, and it was arranged that she should stay successively two days in the house of each, an that no one of them but the master of the house should enter it while she was there. Arjuna was her favourite, and she showed her jealousy when he married Subhadra.

when the paandavaas were leading under ground life, they used to share every thing for eating. after Arjuna became winner in the swayam varam of draupadi, he cam to house and told her mother that he had brought a fruit and kunti, the mother of pandavas told him to share that fruit with his 4 brothers. thus draupadi had become the wife of pandavas. another reason cited was in her previous birth, she prayed lord Shiva and asked him to give her husband of 5 qualities.for this request lord Shiva, told her that in her next birth she would get 5 husbands with 5 qualities.

i guess it was NOT a poliandry practise. instead, Drupadi was a symbol of 5 women as wives of 5 Pandawa.
