He had a terrible childhood. His owner basically fed him food that he didnt eat and he is very skinny unlike most of his breed. But, in the past two weeks that he's with me he has grown to be very fond of me and i treat him well and feed him the right food (soft dog food which he emties it whenever its given). But then, he doesnt want to sleep in his bed that i brought him. I put a fench so he can stay put but tries every conniving way to get over the fench and unto my work place. At night, if i dont take him to bed with me, he will moan and cry all night. Should i discipline him or is he just a loving dog. He is a bichon frise.

He loves you, man. Dogs run in packs, they normally sleep close together, laying on top of each other. You are part of his new pack now. When he is sure he is accepted and feels secure he may not need so much reassurance. Make it clear his place is on the foot. Remember you are the pack leader, as the oldest male, so he will do what you say.

Dogs are very very very simple creatures. It is clear that this dog considers you the alpha. The fact that the dog had a very hard time in it's preivious pack is the clue here. He's got a good thing going and wants too make sure his new pack (you) endures and he also wants too make sure his place in the pack endures. This is the why of the situation.

Now... It sounds like you are keen too have your bed all too your self. Fair enough. You can get your bed back. It will take a bit of time and will require a behavioral change from you.

First of all you have too stop giving puppy monster so much attention. I'm assuming that when you go out and leave puppy monster behind he absolutely flips out with joy on your return. And in turn you get into the "Who's my bestest buddy?" routine. And then their is the scratching behind the ears ritual and the jumping about. Normal dog/people relationship.

When you get home just completely ignore him. Don't give him ***any*** attention ***or*** food untill he's settled. Do make sure you work with him for at least thirty minutes a day on basic obiedance stuff. Next. Don't let him in the bed. When he attempts too get into the bed scold him in a firm manner. "[dogs name goes here] no! Sit! Good! Stay!" and then try too go back too sleep. Ignore the whineing. I know it's gonna be hard but you are just going too have too wear that one.

It shouldn't take more than a couple of weeks too get him sorted out. If it doesn't seem too be catching on you might consider taking him too a vet and discussing other opptions like a short course of doggy prozac.

The only other option is too lock him up in an out door kennel and in my mind that's just mean. Other people feel differntly. I think it's mean.

Hope this helps some.

Dogs are social creatures, dude. If you don't want him to cry all night, let him in the room with you. If you don't want him on the bed, put his bed in your room. Bichon Frise are small, so he wouldn't take up much room if he slept with you. My sister had a small mutt (she slept on the top bunk) and little George would sleep with her at the foot of her bed. If he had to get out, he'd just drop onto my bed (Queen size bottom bunk) and wake me up. To get back up, he'd actually climb the ladder. Smart puppy.

Your puppy loves you and wants to be with you. Train him in acceptable and unacceptable behavior and the two of you will get along very well.

Good luck and hope that helps.
