Sounds like the dog has not been trained right - A cage is really only supposed to be used to train them for house breaking - when they go in it you say no no and take them right outside. As puppies, it is ok to have them spend night in there but as an older dog or not a small puppy, it would not be healthy for the dog to be so cooped up in a small area - it is bad for their muscles and legs and all to be in a cage too much.
Might be better if you were to leave him in the kitchen or something with some papers on the floor and a gate up or two gates up if the dog can't be free to walk around the house - this way he can stretch out and be healthy and sleep comfortable. You may be causing some problems keeping him in a cage too often - they are not meant to be in cages that often. If anything, as puppies to house break them or occasionally for sleep or if they are sick and need to stay away from another dog - something like that but he may be not feeling well in there all of the time and getting stress from it and going in his cage because of it - sounds to me like he is stressed and should be let to stay in another room.
Why not allow him into the kitchen instead of being crated all the times he is in the crate- put him in the kitchen with some newspaper down instead and just get some gates and use the to block off the entrance and or exit to the kitchen but he needs room - or he is going to have multiple problems with his legs and hips, etc - it is not healthy for him.

There can be a couple reasons for this behavior.
The dog could be confined too much in the cage.
The cage is too large for the puppy and gives him the space to do business that isn't part of his "bed".
One other thing is that puppies, from puppymill breeders tend to do this. The reason is the conditions puppymill breeders keep their dogs. They have no option but to go in the cage and so they are forced to "unlearn" the behavior most have of "not doing business in the den". So you might think about where your pup came from to determine if this is a possiblity.
Best suggestion is to make sure the pup gets out more and for longer periods to make sure the business is done before crating for the nite. Also, young pups can only go 30 minutes to 2 hours, even at nite, so at this young age, just as with a human baby, you will need to get up and take the pup out. If you don't do this, the puppy is left with no choice but to eliminate inside the cage.

Some dogs sleep in their cages with the door open. Cages are a secure place that some dogs feel protected in...especially if there are little kids pulling ears and gouging eyes.
3 walks a day should be fine but a longer walk or more time in the yard would probably help. I used the 3 walk a day formula with a Great Dane. He would poop on every other walk. One time a day, then 2 times a day. Every day he would have a run at least once for about 30 min...rain or shine.

The cage is just too big, it should be big enough for him to turn around in and no bigger. I hope he's not in it all the time except for when he's "taken out everyday in the morning afternoon and at night before bed"......that would be very very cruel.....he should be in it overnight at the most or you shouldn't have taken on the responsibilty of an animal.

hmm...dogs don't normally go in their cages. Is he still a pup? If the cage is too large, he will go in one section of it and keep the rest clean. Maybe he needs to be taken out more often. I made the mistake of not letting my puppy run around enough when I took him outside. He would avoid pooping because he knew that pooping would end his romp. I learned to give him more time.
I am proud to say that I was able to housebreak my dog, by myself.

Because you are confining him in his cage for too long. You should only keep your dog in his crate when you're sleeping and when nobody is at home to watch him. You should take your dog outside for a while and walk him an hour or more (depending on the breed) each day.
His crate might be too big or he might have too much space in there. Dogs never relieve themself where they sleep so he might have too much space. If he has too much space, he might do his business in there because he still has space to play/sleep/eat.

I would too, if i was kept in a cage all the time. What did u get it for? It's one thing to have to put it in there while ur at work, but after that? Come on. Sounds a bit cruel to me. If all u want to do is have it in a cage, than go to the pet store, u can see them in cages there, and u don't have to worry about feeding them. AND people wonder why Animal Control is called on them.

when i first got my puppy her kennel was too big so she would go in a corner. i got a smaller kennel for her and that stopped, dogs don't like being near their poop so they will learn not to go in its kennel. also don't feed the dog the hour before he is put in the kennel and make sure he has plently of time outside before and after he is kennelled. i believe the only way to house train a dog is by kennelling him when you aren't home... as long as the dog isn't in there all day there is nothing wrong with kennelling a dog

if your dog is young ? he may not know how to control his bowel movements yet ? and where do you want him to do his business ? clean his cage , and try not to feed him at any hours
put him on a regular feeding habits, with time ? he should get used to and stop pooping like you say in his cage
good luck .....
