Chef's clothing is traditionally white because it gets dirty in the kitchen and you can BLEACH white to get out all the stains. Same reason it is a durable fabric and not silk, unless they are the front room chef that orders everyone around and does not actually cook.

Being a chef is about so many things not just cooking as we do it in our homes. A chef has to learn so many things even before he or she actually gets to churn up a dish. Cutting, slicing, dicing etc. are the basics. Hygeing comes next. A chef has to do a tedious job and still not look it. Moreover the customer who orders the chefs dishes has the personal satisfaction that utmost cleanliness and hygeine has been mantained in the kitchens by the person who is in charge.The chef's clean white clothes bears testmony to the fact.

Not all do, some wear reds, blues, and blacks. But white looks the cleanest at first glance.

They wear many colors of chef's coats, pants and hats. For example, black, black & white, b.w checked, red chili pattern, etc., etc.,

So they can see that who ever's whites are still white at the end of the shift are slacking off.

Hygiene, you can see imitate if its not clean.
And Hygiene come first before the cutting!!!!
