The realization that we are more than what we think is inherent in every culture. All of human kind trying to grasp the idea that there is something bigger than ourselves, reaching for an explanation for the mysteries that seem so large even questioning is sometimes reaching past comprehension. How is it then that all of man kind is bound by the concept of a creator? Is it all an illusion installed in our minds from fairy tales past down from generation to generation? Is it a lack confidence in mans ability to reason? I say that this idea is bigger than any question but as simple as saying the answer is the color blue or X marks the spot. The fact that we as a human race collectively find ourselves along this line of questioning, shows in its very nature that we all feel disconnected from something greater than this human experience. Whether the answer you find is there is nothing more than this life, or religion Y, or religion Z, the bottom line is that all of mankind searches for this unilateral longing of finding what we are disconnected from. I found my answer and truth in the Bible, from the fall of man, to the reconciliation of man with God through Jesus Christ; I have the evidence of myself being a skeptical hardened man, to a faithful kind caring loving man transformed by something that is greater than I. I can not describe things unseen, hence such is the evidence of faith, but I most pose this question to all. Why do we, as mankind, desire to find a connection to something that is more than ourselves past our circumstance and culture? Only real honest answers please. I am not seeking to do anything but see how people feel about this subject. For I know I am captivated by it.

Your experience of transformation through Christ sounds quite like my own.

And my answer to the question is that God plants the desire to seek him in our souls. What we choose to seek is determined by us, but there is only one thing that we can find that is real--which is salvation through Jesus Christ, the Son of God.

Nico Suave,
I suppose that hardship drives many of us to try to find something greater than ourselves. One of the main hardships, I believe, is the crisis some of us feel when we face our mortality. The idea that we are definitely going to die. There is no way out of that apparently.

So we look outside ourselves for what it could possibly be that will preserve us. Some of us find God at the end of that quest. And some of us don't.

So the question might come up, "How do I know that this God is the true God, if that's what is true?"

Well, God has a way of revealing Himself to some of us. He doesn't appear, or speak, or wiggle something in the room that might not normally wiggle, and yet He let's us know that He is there.

And that's what happened to me. I know that He is God, and many things have happened since. Suddenly I don't have to wonder. And suddenly I can understand scripture, and it's not a book full of boring things, or things beyond me to understand. Instead there's life within it's pages. It tells me about Jesus, and what He did, and that He was prophecied, and that He was there from the beginning. He made everything.

But you see, there is a reason why we say, "Glory to God." Because He provided the way to Him, and He decided that we are to understand Him in some capacity. He didn't have to, but that's what He did.

So be skeptical. Ask lots of questions. But in order for you to have His help in understanding Him, you have to trust Him, not be perfect in all your ways, but trust Him. And you can't make that leap of faith unless He wants you in the first place. You won't want to.

I know how I feel about your question and would be happy to share my experience with you. I began searching in my early 20's trying to find the answer to "why am I here". i think at that time of my life i became more aware of the rest of the world and less of that childlike "me, me,me" attitude. i know that there is a "something or someone" (whatever your beleifs are) that is greater than me. I felt like i couldn't control the world, just try to offer my "talents, treasure and kindness" to others. that is when i became a nurse. people used to tell me how "wonderful" that was for nurses to care for people (I held many dying hands). BUT my answer always was and will always be that I received more I ever gave. I found a church that fulfills my personal needs. I do not beleive that everyone should be the same religion but i do beleive that we all need to care more for each other. I know with the miricles I have seen that indeed there is a power greater than I.

I thought I would praise God for a moment for your salvation. Bless you brother.

Some people believe in man's ability to reason as his only God. Self is is exalted in the minds of men. Jesus taught that self is the problem with man. Look at human history. What has reason accomplished? Most of the scientific advances done in the past few hundred years were done by Christians seeking to understand the order they knew must exist in the universe.

The problem with the original sin was Adam and Eve using reason instead of God as their guideline for understanding truth (my opinion). All things that are good are founf in the word of God. Most people just don't like to be told what to do or how to do it. But God's way really is the best way.

Yes there is a deep desire inside our souls which demand us towards perfection and perfection is God .That is also the motion of all universe creatures. You can say it is like that we are connected to that place where we came from and we are moving in such a way which will lead us to return back as a perfect souls to live in a perfect place called Heaven and that is our duty in this life where God will guide us to achieve that aim .

You ask: Why do we desire a connection to something that is more than ourselves? Because God created us with the desire to seek Him out voluntarily, by free will. I believe that we are born with the desire to know Him, and when we are tempted to do otherwise the most magnificent opportunity is forever lost. If we have not accepted this simple concept, we will forever be searching for something to fulfill our lives.

Your question is much more complex and detailed than my answer will be.

I believe in a higher intelligence. I call him God, and believe him to be the creator. Is God like a man? I don't know. Does God guide my life? I believe he does.

Is there an afterlife and will I be part of it? I believe there will be and I will be, but I don't know what it will be like. I am a patient man and will be happy to wait a few more decades to find out. (I'm 65 now.)

As I have read the Bible, I found out that man is always struggling in his whole lifetime to be complete. From the womb, where the humanoid features develop; to childhood, where "instincts" are discovered; to adolescence, where identity is figure out; to adulthood, where principles are established. Unfortunately, man cannot seem to figure out what is still missing in his being. Why?
Man is not an independent being. Take it from all aspects, it's true. We are very vulnerable to our needs -- especially, the need for spiritual comfort. We always crave for that state of being where all our questions are fully answered, our doubts are completely healed by the truth. Jesus felt this also;
Matthew 11:28-29,
"Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest for your souls."
Jesus felt also that it is He who is missing in the beings of the troubled and weary. Of course, being the co-creator of God and the owner of the whole cosmos, Jesus truly is the person we need. All we have to do is learn from Him, just as He said. Study His words and find comfort in His wisdom. Trust in His righteousness and feel His salvation all through out our lifetime. God said so also that physical maturity does not complete our beings. We are not yet "done" as far as He's concerned. What makes us complete, then?
Isaiah 41:4,
"Who hath wrought and DONE IT, CALLING THE GENERATIONS from the beginning? I the Lord, the first, and with the last; I am He."
It is God who has wrought our beings from the womb, to childhood, to adolescence, to adulthood. But He is also the one who can makes us "done" through His calling.
Ultimately, God must be the First and the Last in our lives to make us complete.
