My plant is supposed to become dormant soon, and I don't know if I still have to take care of it. I also don't know when it will wake up from its rest and how I will know that it has.

The exact answer will depend upon the species of plant, but generally, all you need to do is stop fertilizing it and watering it and place it in a cool location.

The Oxalis regnelli or shamrock should be placed in a darkened room until February. Many other plants, including Cyclamen and Gloxinia have dormant periods.

You will know that the dormant period is over when the plant begins to grow again. At this point, resume regular watering and provide sufficient light.

When in doubt, take the plant to a local greenhouse to have it identified and to get specific instructions.

To correctly answer your question one would need to know if you are asking about an indoor plant or a garden perennial. You could also ask the question in the garden and landscape category as botany is the study of plants and not the care of them.
