No its not too early... in fact the cake will mature if it has plenty of sherry in it. I will of course need to be wrapped up well in foil and the in a tin or plastic tub. Cakes keep well for years in marzipan and icing if wrapped well. The icing and marzipan are removed and discard before re coating. There was a time when the top tear of a wedding cake would be kept and used as a christening cake for the first born... wedding cakes and Christmas cakes are very much the same recipe.

I always make mine mid-November. Make it later it will crumble when you try to cut it.
You can make it now, but keep it in a cake tin till you put on the marzipan and then ice it, shortly before Christmas.
I suppose you could ice it in advance. After all, traditionally the third tier of a wedding cake was put aside to be used for the Christening, which according to tradition was not expected to happen for at least nine months after the wedding. Times change!

No! Make it now, I make mine every September; prick holes into the cake with a skewer, wrap it in tin foil put it in an airtight container and once a week pour a tablespoon of brandy over the cake to preserve it. By Christmas you'll have a rich moist cake!

Never too early for Christmas cake. Put plenty of guinness in it and a bit of whisky and brandy and this will preserve for till the next millennium.
Nice to eat it at Christmas though!

People actually make them? Huh. I thought there were just a certain number in circulation, and we were all just re-gifting them over and over.
If you are making stuff like fruitcake, you should have made it in June. It's supposed to be stale, and I mean really stale, I believe, by the time you give it away. You missed the boat!
(And on the off chance this was a serious question, I didn't mean any offense, really. If your cakes can be frozen and thawed later, I don't see why you cannot start making them now. Just be sure to wrap them well so they don't get freezer burn between now and the holidays.)

No it's an ideal time to make your cake. After it's come out of oven, leave to cool for half an hr then sprinkle top with about an egg cup full of brandy or rum (not essential, but adds to flavour) When completely cold wrap in greaseproof paper, then tinfoil. Keep in a cool dark place. About 5 days before Xmas, put your almond paste on it, leave for 2 days before putting royal icing on ti (if of course you are icing it !) also good time to make xmas puds, mincemeat.... and sloe gin!!

No, its the perfect time to make Christmas cakes, my mam always made hers 10 weeks before Christmas and she was a master baker, they have the edge on those made a few weeks before and are so much more moist too, get your pinny on and bake your cakes and don't forget to make a wish when your stirring it, good luck.

Its the alcohol which is the preservative. Make 3 weeks before Christmas and wrap up well with greaseproof paper in a sealed tin. Next week put almond icing on Week up to Christmas put Royal icing on.
