I would prefer that you answer this question if you have done a RTW tour thing.

How do they work. Do you have to put your destinations in and dates or is it flexible??

What are the catches and that. Can u just tell me everything about it as I am considering doing this round world thing!

I am a travel agent and my specialty is round the world tickets.
Here we go:
First thereare three major frequent flyer groups: Star Alliance, Sky Team and OneWorld. If you have a frequent flyer with an airline in any of these groups, check their networks first.
Second complile a list of the cities which you would like to visit.
Remember: you have to keep going in the same direction, unless using a hub of an airline for a side trip.
The fare is calculated based on mileage for the entire trip or for OneWorld, continents.
These tickets are usually valid for one year and have to be purchased one or two weeks before departure, but, due to the complexity and the various airlines involved, should be booked well in advance.
A minimum of three stops is normally required and a minimum stay of ten days for the entire journey.
If you are travlling to only a few cities, a creative travel agent will be able to put to gether an itinerary buying tickets in several countries and will beat the price of a normal round the world ticket.
I hope that this info will be helpful

Mrticketphils's answer is pretty comprehensive but I suppose I can add my own experience.

I have done a Qantas/British Airways (oneworld alliance) ticket around the world.

The dates are indeed flexible but you have to use all your flights within 12 months of departure. The destinations, however, are not flexible.

Furthermore, by changing dates during the course of the trip, they charge a ticket re-issue fee.
