well succes is a dangerous thing to care about when you are an artists, I think. Because then you deal with vanity and lots of other things that can damage you and the quality of the work you make.
So I create just for myslef, not caring what the audience, galleries, etc. will say. What I care about is staying connected to myself, developing as a personality, getting rid of the stones hanging around my neck..so whan I work in this spirit of personaly freedon - free of oppinions and being connected to myself, then things coming out under my brush are good. I know that no matter what other say. And what is good for me, must work for others as well.
Now this above is a very helpfull atitude, when I approach a gallery. I do not depend on them because I do not search for succes. It will happen or not. I am free of frars and wishes. So I just send a portfolio, or a CD portfolio with a letter to many, many galleries. Simpply the logick is: nock on mayn doors -maybe one will open. Then call them to ask for aninterview. And do ot give up! Even if you are rejected, trust yourelf and just keep going, nocking and nocking.
That is what I think. try any place you can try, Nock any door. One will open.
Good luck.

I would definitely recommend you set up your own website, with all your artwork on display & contact details, offers for commisions etc

Also have you considered an Ebay shop, if your primary aim is to sell your work then Ebay has a huge audience. I check Ebay all the time & there are definitely artists out there selling their work worlwide on a regular basis. Some of the stuff is great, other stuff a bit crap but that's the great thing about art it really is all about personal taste & not what some pompous art critics think ...

However if you want to become a serious artist & 'name' in the art world I can totally see this is not the way to go - have no idea how folks get their art into the Tate Gallery, have no idea what half the stuff is doing there full stop...but that's a different discussion, good luck !!

I just kept hitting the local galleries and finally was accepted into one.My work is not really that commercial (I'm a fan of Dali's and my work reflects this), though I have had some success at selling and great support from my fellow artists.
I just got a computer in July, and eventually intend to have a website as soon as I know more of what I'm doing, being encouraged by friends and other artists to do this. I'm also realizing the importance of having good slides and photos of your work and am working in that direction also.

Hi Oli, I have a handmade paper business, Paper Nymph.
I am looking for artists to print on my recycled paper in the form of cards & notelets. Recently I launched a boxed seahorse collection by artist Carl Estella which was his art scanned & printed on handpaper with seaweed throughout (it's brilliant).
I am only now looking to introduce my work to retail outlets, (for the past 9 years I have been promoting my papermaking kit & method) & seeking a range of art that combines well with the paper. I will be putting the artists name & web address on the back of each card as a form of advertising for the artist & giving a commission per card sold so people can view all of your work.

A few years ago, I volunteered to help pain a mural at the local high school. I do not usually do mural work, but it help me get my name out there. I sold quite a few paintings after that.

My work was popular as long as I kept my face, name and other works in the news. If you don't keep up a constant public showing people tend to forget about you.
