My opinion - because we all have free will and since there is obviously no clear cut reason to believe in one over the other (yeah, I know there are some wacky religions out there) people make a whole bunch of different decisions.

Furthermore, if there was a real God of a specific religion then he would obviously want us to do things one way or another and, since it is so important, he would have made sure that we did things "right".

Conclusion - there is no God or there is a God but he doesn't care about our religions.

A

I think there are different religions because there are many different cultures scattered over a very large earth. People come up with answers to explain what they don't know and that varies by what they see and experience geographically and the developed culture. It's easy to believe in a volcano god and a god that lives underground when you live near one that errupts - but it's unheard of in other places, where maybe the Aurora Borealus leads folks to believe god is in the skies and comes to visit that way. Half of the rules in Judaism for example seem to be there due to health reasons (not eating pork or shellfish, etc.)

Remember that up until the last century, the world was a much larger place and people didn't mingle as they do today. Today the mingling shows us all the differences in theories that have been developed across the globe over the ages - and that doesn't include the countless sects and offshoots that have come and gone through the ages.

Peace!

ok, I'm confused b/c your 2 questions seem to be asking 2 different things.
People often believe in several different things instead of just one, I think b/c they don't want to commit to just one. So instead, they take the "best parts" of each one and form their own. But they don't realize that faith is not like martial arts...you can still take them all and form your own to work best for you, but there's only 1 that's true, and He's a jealous God...He won't share people w/ other "gods".
As for the 2nd part, why so many people believe in different religions, probably b/c they just don't know which one's the true way. They either believe they all lead to the same destination, or they believe each is beneficial.
Hey, a site that might help you some with these questions is http://www.barna.org/
Barna does surveys and research (estimated statistics, too) on the beliefs of people and such.

Because a lot of people know that the three major religions(Judaism, Christianity, and Islam), all came from the same God. Consider the story of Joseph. It is almost exactly the same in the Bible as it is in the Quran. The only thing is, in the Quran, it is more detailed. Still, the same story. There are so many of the same prophets, the same stories, etc, in the Torah, Bible, and the Quran, therefore, that means they all originated from the same God. That's the only logical answer.

How many different ideas can you make up, randomly, to describe the origins of the universe, in the space of a minute?

There you go. The difference between that and religion is that people, for some reason, take religion seriously. They actually believe it.

Each religion I think is a quest for 'God' or an attempt to fill the void within human spirit, which is a lost relationship with the creator. Maybe different circumstances, environments and spiritual realities have given rise to the differences.

A house divided cannot stand. It is the way satan keeps religious people from being strong. If you need to be praying or reading the Bible, the devil will put some turmoil in your life. You will worry about and think about the problem instead of working to get closer to God. The devil has just caused division in your life and made you more weak.

Because there are Religions that are older than Judaism and Christianity in the world.
Just as ADAM and EVE met other Tribes outside of the Garden of Eden when they were escorted out.where did these other tribes come from and how much Longer were they around.

Because People believe in different prophets. They accept some and reject others. In Islam, we believe that prophets have
been sent to every nation pre-Muhammad and Islam has come to sum all those 120,000 messages up. Notice that these religions below are the worlds major religions. Find that ironic? All these "could be" from God . But people have chose to be picky and set up their own "groups". That even happens within the same religion! In my opinion none of the major religions are made up, but many have become distorted.

Examples All in areas in middle east or touches borders with middle east (India)

Abraham/Moses[Judiasm] Egypt
Jesus [Christianity] Palestine
Abraham/Muhammad[Islam] Arabia
Zoroaster[Zoroasterianism] Iran
Rama[Hinduism] India
Buddha [Buhdism] India

No Compulsion in Religion

[2:256] There shall be no compulsion in religion: the right way is now distinct from the wrong way. Anyone who denounces the devil and believes in GOD has grasped the strongest bond; one that never breaks. GOD is Hearer, Omniscient.

2:136] Say, "We believe in GOD, and in what was sent down to us, and in what was sent down to Abraham, Ismail, Isaac, Jacob, and the Patriarchs; and in what was given to Moses and Jesus, and ***all the prophets from their Lord***. We make no distinction among any of them. To Him alone we are submitters."

Abraham is the father of all true faiths. he was a seeker and did not call himself Jew, Christian, or Buhddist, but submitted himself to God and called other believers to it.

The Quran is clear and explains all these questions on yahoo answers.

Because humans made religion, and because they can all have very different ideas and views on how people should believe, and because they live in all different parts of the world with different cultural things, they created many different religions.
