I would tell them that I have met the conditions for eternal life as given in John 3:16...
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life
I would then explain just what that means and what believing in Jesus actually is...it is not simply believing He existed and even that He paid for our sins. Read the link below for full clarification on how we know we have eternal life.

Don't quote the bible at all. If someone doesn't believe in your religion, the bible verses won't convince them you're right. They'll just think you're nuts.
Learn to argue without using the bible. You'll be far more convincing.

My favorite one is (and I believe it says it all) 2nd Timothy 1:12 "For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know Whom I have believed; and am persuaded that He is able to keep that which I have committed unto Him against that day. (he speaks of the day of Judgment.) Jesus didn't leave our Salvation in our hands, He knew we'd mess it up. Our Keeping is in His Care, and He Fails Not. Once Saved, we are judged on His Performance, not ours. His Righteousness is "Imputed" to us (since we have none of our own) therefore God recognizes His finished works as ours. (Isiah says, "All our righteousness is as filthy rags.") Since that's the best we can offer, we need His Righteousness. It is so simple, we are not judged on our works, but His. That is the only way that anyone will get to Heaven, He took us out of the formula & did it all. Salvation is a Gift of Grace, not of our works, lest any man could boast of obtaining it by his own self-righteousness or works.

Even though "perserverance of the saints" is sound theology, we don't know who's names are written in the Book of Life. But we can have comfort that the Shepherd knows his sheep, and the sheep know his name. Don't know where that verse is though.

using the bible to prove the bible is the ultimate in idiocy. it is the best way to show you're totally without logic and without the ability to reason, or to even be intelligent.
"i know the bible is right -- because i can show you a few pages in the bible that says so..."
go figure...
