well one can say he was a seeker of thruth the same way Abraham-pbuh, Jonah-pbuh and Jesus-pbuh was. they were people who started thinking about God and concept of Faith since childhood. Moses-pbuh's quest started after he gave up his Luxuries. Muhammed-pbuh wasnt a Pagan for sure. he would meditate for long hours in caves of Mount Hira. i feel it was his earnest desire to seek Allah that lead him to God Himself. he was called Al-Amin and Al-Aziz in whole of Aabia -- meaning the Trustworthy and The Loved. what fascinates me is his simplicity. he was the son and nephew of the Leader of Tribe of Qureysh but never did he misuse the advantage and privelages. never did he even come close to wanting or desiring anything for him.

latest research showed that Muhammad used to go to small church in Mecca( the site still exist ) with his wife Kadija who has Christians relatives. The majority in Mecca were pagans and he started preaching there with the help of his wife, then migrated to Medina and also start preaching there and then order his followers to face the Kaaba (Mecca) instead of Jerusalem and since then Muslims facing Kaaba in their prayers.

He was a seeker.
He was distressed with the present state of Arabia and meditated in far away caves to find the meaning of life. He didn't worship idols because something in his gut told him it was wrong. He believed in a God, but spend his life before prophet-hood helping people with their problems and being a trustee to most of the people of Arabia.
