My husband is a Marine and I know they don't wear them out in public, but I have no clue why. I think the reason given to you was B.S. too ... you must have heard that from another
Marine : ) I'm sure you'll get an answer before I get the chance to ask him. He's sleeping. If not I'll let you know.
It's not because of wear, because on his way home from Reserves he said he couldn't get out of the car to go to the store while he had them on.

I don't know what the reason is for the Marines, but I was in the Army and we couldn't wear uniforms in public either... The reason why is because you would make yourself a target for anyone who was against America... When you join the military you are the governments property and they have spent alot of money on each and every one of their soldiers... So they don't want any compromises to their property...

Unless you are off base during working hours or the uniform of the day is something else, it is against the uniform regs of the Marine Corp. Wearing your "cammies" to work when you live off base is permitted.

That answer is BS.
Camouflage Utilities are a "working" uniform, hence the name "utilities". Marines pride their selves on military appearance, and wearing grungy utilities in public is not projecting a proper military appearance.

They can, to and from work and occasionally you will see them in airports when heading to leave (on the Army R&R program) they do have a policy of not travaling in uniform but that is more of a Force Protection policy.

I don't know for sure, but I would think it's a more practical reason. Those clothes have a specific purpose and don't need to get ruined from being worn day to day.

I've been told that it's not a professional appearance. The answer that it's because of wear and tear is bullshit, don't you wear them in the field.

you can only wear a uniform off base traveling to and from home or to a function that requires you to be in uniform.
