When he refused to go to Vietnam saying "I ain't got no quarrel with them Viet Cong" spoke volumes. That was the turning point of his career. The government prosecuted him for draft dodging, and the boxing commission took away his license. He was idle for three and a half years during what should have been the peak of his career.

Defeating Sonny Liston for the Heavyweight championship of the world was unexpected and considered one of the biggest upsets in boxing history. Sonny Liston was a ferocious boxer that had one-punch knockout power in each hand. Almost everbody expected him to knock out Cassius Clay (his name before becoming a Muslim). Like Ali said "I shook up the world!".

Ali was not expected to beat George Foreman when they fought in Africa. Foreman was thought to be unbeatable at the time. There is an excellent documentary film about the fight called "When We Were Kings"

umm, also, i don't think he expected to go to prison for being a conscientious objector to the Vietnam war refusing to serve in the military after he was drafted back when the USA had a draft.
