I actually put a flea collar on my 3 kittens. Within 4 days they all had huge bumps on their necks. It was awful. I would not suggest it. I would suggest advantage or frontline. As long as you keep the dog away from your son for at least 24 hours to let it dry then he should be fine.
You definately want to get the fleas taken care of though because they will bite that child all the time.

Gad, these answers scare me sometimes.
Ok, here's the real deal with flea collars and kids:
If the kid is going to put it into his mouth, then the answer is definitely NO. The typical flea collar has pesticide on it (some have only repellants) and are not intended for internal use in any way.
If your kids is old enough to know better and responsible enough to wash his hands every time after playing with the dog (as they should, anyway), then go for it and put a flea collar on the dog.
A much more effective way to treat for fleas is to add a garlic and brewer's yeast powder to their food. You can get the powder at any decent pet supply store and just sprinkle it all over the top of their food. Most dogs love it, it's completely non-toxic, and it really works. Plus, in the long run, it's a WHOLE lot cheaper than the flea collar.
Vets don't tell you about it b/c nobody wants to know that it's such a fast, cheap, and easy fix. People want a "magic pill" or "magic flea collar" that costs them $15 a month instead of a $12 bottle of powder that will last you a year. For some reason, people WANT to spend a lot of money or the don't think that they are getting something worthwhile.
I'm dealing with the same problem with my business. I have computers that are superior in quality but nowhere near as expensive as my competition. For some reason, people often pay **more** for an **inferior** product because I'm "too cheap". People baffle me. Ok, I'm done venting now, thanks.
Now, is the dog scratching from fleas or is there something else causing the dog's skin to itch? Is his skin just dry and itchy? If so, then cook up a 1/4 lb. of the cheapest hamburger meat you can get (it has the most fat, which is what you are looking for)and mix it in with his food for a week. His skin will get the oils it needs to keep from itching.
Also, a daily "treat" of a fish oil capsule will fix a dry coat in about a week as well. A BIG bottle from Wal-Mart costs me about $12 and lasts well over a year.

Flea collar are safe with children, they are not toxic and only contain a flea-repellent of sorts. However I recommend getting ur dog defleaed using special shampoo instead of getting her a flea collar; my dog used to have the same problem but after flea collar was fitted it turn out that it worked perfectly…only now the fleas have switch to us and have abandoned my dog as a host. Just buy special shampoo and washed him/her down very thoroughly and also give ur house a complete clean up, especially rugs and under carpets where fleas kept their eggs and pupae and u should have no problem dealing with it.

Flea collars and any other OTC flea product is not safe to use on your dog let alone around your children. They have a very high concentration of pesticides. These pesticides can cause neurological issues, seizures and death in your pets.
The only safe product to use on your pet and around your children is a flea product purchased from your vet.

any flea products are harmful around kids. just spend the $40 and have the dog flea dipped at the vet.
fleas aren't much better for kids either nor is a flea filled home.

It should be okay if your kid is older (1st grade or older), but they aren't too safe with younger kids. If your child is older, be sure to make him wash his hands often no matter what. If your child is younger, use flea drops or get flea baths for your dog.

They're safe - but they have loads of information on the package - check that to reassure yourself.
