There was nobody around to marry them so I guess they just lived together without benefit of marriage.

Genesis 4:1, Now Adam knew Eve his wife, and she conceived and bore Cain...
The verb, "knew", is the only indication of their relationship as man and woman. Generally, there is no mention of a marriage certificate or marriage ceremony as we know it today in the Old Testament. Occasionally a bride is mentioned in conjunction with the man giving monetary wealth for the bride, such as Jacob working for Rebbecca and eventually increasing Nehemiah's wealth before he finally took her to wife. A man "went in unto" the woman or "uncovered" the woman which constituted husband and wife. Marriage is talked about a great deal more by Paul in clerical instructions in Romans and Corinthians of the New Testament.

Yes they had a license.
Marrying before God is a Sacrament that got them a lifetime license.
It is the same now. When we marry before God we become the part of His this Sacred Sacrament and we also get this lifetime license to live with the partner until death do us apart.
Hope you understand it now.
