when you are on any med long term, you body functions within that context... it depends on the components of the med to keep you up and running (or even down and sleeping :-{) Abruptly removing your med will cause your body to react big time... and like others have said, zoloft is a b*tch to get off of...
while I don't put much stock in docs, its best to at least check in with them when you make the decision to go off a medication so that someone knows what's up with you that can help if, heaven forbid, its needed... yep, it can get that hairy sometimes
what the doc will do and you can do it yourself to wean yourself off is first take the pill every other dose or cut the pill in half... do that for a bit so your body learns to depend on less of the substance.... little by little til there's nothing left in your system...
and as you think to go off the medication (which is like an inner tube that is allowing you to float) if you want to stay off meds, you gotta learn how to swim... you CAN learn to compensate for your symptoms by using your strengths....
meds mask symptoms, they don't 'fix' anything.... I've read too much to believe the hype
shooooo, there's a TV ad for a med for rheumatoid arthritis that cautions that one of the side effects can be cancer, for garsh sakes!!!!!!
we are a nation of instant gratification... quick fixes.... and belief that docs are out there to help... they have good intentions but consumers of mental health meds are their bread and butter.... what would happen if we all decided to work on our issues rather than mask them with meds? psychiatrists would be out of business... sure, there are folks that are in serious psychotic distress and need more attention but not enough to keep psychiatrists in the manner they have become accustomed to and they are not really going to let that happen.... being on meds will be a life long sentence (because they don't work on the whole person - just the symptoms; take away the meds and the symptoms come back.. vicious cycle) and VOILA! the docs' future is secure. I am not a naysayer or a cynic... just well and widely read on the topic
The walking wounded of the world have the capacity and capability of working this out
even if you were to stay on meds, meds alone don't cut it.... again, they just hide the symptoms....
I'd suggest checking in your local area for a support group - people who are struggling just like you....
the site below has been a life saver for me.. Mary Ellen's WRAP literally helped me regain control of my self and now, med free, I have my life back, better than ever before

RE:
What happens if you abruptly stop taking Zoloft?
Has anyone had experience in this matter? It clearly says not to abruptly stop taking so I am assuming you have to ween yourself off but what if you don't?

With any SSRI I highly recommend weening very slowly. A lot of people have had withdrawal symptoms which are quite unpleasant. If you do a search on Zoloft Withdrawal Symptoms you should see a lot of sites that detail them and offer advice on weaning.

As with any drug it is best to seek your doctors approval before going off of it. With that said, if you just stop taking it (Zoloft) you can suffer from serious side effects.
Good luck, but consult your doctor first!

The fact that you're feeling sick is a good sign that you need to start taking your meds again. If they're not working right, or if they make you feel messed up, or if you think you'd be okay without them, or if you can't afford them, talk to your doctor. There are lots of better solutions than giving yourself withdrawal and the associated rebound depression.

you should ween but the dr. needs to do that.
Also ATTENTION EVERYONE: psychotropic meds do not have withdrawl because they aren't physically addictive. People that are on the meds that say the are addicted are more likely meaning that they are afraid to get off of them. (it's more socially appropriate to be addicted than be scared).
Listen. meds mask symptoms but they can be helpful for chronically depressed ALONG WITH skill builing like coping skills. I totally agree with the chick with the oober long shpeal. Just talk with your doctor. Better a psychiatrist because this is where they specialize. PCP's take a 1 hour seminar from a drug rep.

i've taken zoloft before, and, i thought i could just take myself off of it. zoloft is very hard...you can't just stop taking it. you have to wean yourself off it. or else, you'll get sick. BELIEVE me, that's a sickness you will never forget. when i quit taking zoloft cold turkey, i got so sick. i had the worst migraine of my life (i've been suffering from migraines for 10 years) and i couldn't keep any food down without puking it up. i had to go to the hospital and everything. all because of that stupid zoloft ! yeah...DONT stop taking zoloft cold turkey! take it from the pro of all anti-depressants.
