I don't think you can know for sure. The Internet makes it easy to assume a false identity. As long as you're comfortable talking with him, I wouldn't worry too much. But DO NOT give out any personal info. If it becomes uncomfortable, then break it off. If you don't feel safe, then you might consider notifying the authorities.
