If you study all of the references to the 'soul' throughout the bible a very clear picture emerges, the 'soul' is the complete being and not a seperate entity, genesis says Adam 'BECAME a living soul', not that he was 'GIVEN' one. Genesis also shows that Animals are also 'souls' and Ezekiel says that the 'soul that is sinning, it itself will die', those are just 3 examples but you will find that the bible teaches that throughout.

Also here is something to think about, if the soul is immortal and goes to heaven or hell, what is the purpose of the resurrection? If righteous people were enjoying life in heaven astheir final destiny, why bring them back to the earth? The idea that a seperate 'soul' survives death also does not fit in with what the bible teaches about god's purposes.

Below are some excellent links which discuss this

Hope this helps.

Okaay. Seriously. Either people are misinterpreting the Bible or don't believe in it. Right. So here's my opinion.

There is such thing as a soul, it is what makes your body go. It is the lifeforce that keeps your body going. It is your conscience, your will, memory, the ability to reason. What will happen when the body dies, is that it will stay in the ground but the spirit (that's right, I'm a trichotomist) whether you have accepted Jesus as the one true savior(cheesey, but the the way to say it) or not, will go to either heaven of hell right after. Your deeds will be shown before you, and the Book of Life and all that fun stuff. We get brand-new perfect bodies in heaven. I can't wait really.

But the thing is, is that people will label me as a crazy religious. Even though I am merely stating my opinion. I am Christian. So what? I'm not part of the psycho-group that reads between the lines. There is nothing between the lines. It's blank, to indicate a space for the words. Not a secret 'let's condemn the unbelievers'...I am quite sure it never says that.

But my eye does twitch when people twist the Bible's words. I don't know everything in the Book, but I'm learning. I'm still young. I got time.

Yes, the soul lives on. It re-visits all significant experiences during the lifetime. All the major pains and joys are re-lived. If the soul is dissatisfied it re-enters another life in an attempt to live a more fulfilled life. In this judgement, the soul is true and goes by how the conscience has been affected.

That's why religion advices us to go by our conscience and to live a rightful life. So, when the body dies, the soul can then regretlessly join the Supreme without any desires or dissatisfaction. If the mind or body goes against one's conscience during one's lifetime, the soul pays for it by going through the hardships of another life.

Are you asking about the body or the soul? I'm guessing the soul, and many have asked that question. I believe that we have all the answers we need hard wired into our soul, called a conscience. I think if I keep myself free of guilt, remorse, and regret, that whatever I think or believe is right. I believe that I will not always be right because I am not perfect, but that I have the means to make amends. I believe that if you look deep inside yourself with honesty you will find your answer.

Notice all the nonbiblical answers. These are also known as people's opinions. They are of the opinion that the soul lives on, or the soul goes to heaven of hell. But, the only thing that you should be concerned about is what that Bible says about death.

The Bible say to compare verse with verse, line upon line, precept upon precept. Isaiah 28:10

This is the way to study the Bible according to Isaiah. Search for all the verses that have anything to do with death, or the human condition in death. You will find verses like this:

And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul. Genesis 2:7

In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return
Genesis 3:19

But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die Genesis 2:17

For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten. Ecclesiastes 9:5

So far, the Bible seems to indicate that the body returns to the ground and the breath of life goes back to God who gave it. The soul is not immortal. The soul is the combination of body and breath. Without both components there is no soul. Immortality is a gift of God contingent on belief in Jesus. Romans 6:23, John 3:16 The wicked are never promised eternal life, even if it is in hell. Interestingly enough even animals are called souls.

And the second angel poured out his vial upon the sea; and it became as the blood of a dead man: and every living soul died in the sea. Revelation 16:3 I

I believe that your study will confirm what you already know to be true. Don't let a wrong interpretation of the story of the rich man and Lazarus in Luke mislead you. It is a parable, not a thesis on the state of the dead. The rich man is Israel, the poor man is the Gentile nations, clearly an allegory.

Also, don't let texts be taken out of context like absent from the body and present with the Lord. Again, read the whole chapter. Clothed means alive, naked means dead or unclothed. When Paul states that he would rather be absent from this body, he does not mean dead, but rather that he would rather be clothed in his heavenly body rather than with his earthly body. Compare other things Paul says about death.

U are a spititual being in essence having a physical experience....The only judge is the one you assert upon yourself....so what happens to the body.....it decays and becomes part of the beginning of the life cycle again as fertilizer.....but thats OK your soul lives on eternally.....U will probably have a recap on many of the lessons U may or may not have gotten in this lifetime.....kinda like a de-briefing than if U were unsuccesful in your mission U make plans to come back and do it again......it really is that simple...

From your question, it seems that you are a Bible reader...that's good, keep reading. Meanwhile, look up and read these scriptures and see what you think.

Ecclesiastes 9:5,10
Psalms 146:4
Genesis 2:7
Genesis 3:19
Ezekiel 18:4

Consider what Jesus himself said regarding Lazarus' death. Jesus told his disciples: “Lazarus our friend has gone to rest.” The disciples thought that Jesus meant that Lazarus was resting in sleep, recovering from an illness. They were wrong. Jesus explained: “Lazarus has died.” (John 11:11-14) Notice that Jesus compared death to rest and sleep. Lazarus was neither in heaven nor in a burning hell. He was not meeting angels or ancestors. Lazarus was not being reborn as another human. He was at rest in death, as though in a deep sleep without dreams.

The life we enjoy is like the flame of a candle. When the flame is put out, it does not go anywhere. It is simply gone.

When the body dies (separated from the soul/spirit) usually the body is laid aside, buried in a cemetery (Greek meaning, dormitory).

For a Christian, ti be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord.

For the non-Christian, it seems it has not yet changed from what it was when the "rich man" died and found himself in "torments" ... though no longer can they see Abraham and the righteous across that great gulf.

So, yes, the soul/spirit lives on after the body dies.

As for when the soul dies, that is when the soul is separated (separated from God for eternity).

To "die" does not seem, so much, to mean to "cease to exist"; rather, to be "separated"; separated from the body, separated from God, etc.

The Bible says if you have not accepted Jesus Christ as your Savior, you will go to Hades. In ancient Greek this meant grave and not Hell. There is a place in Revelations where it mentions about those who are not believers and their soul will eventually die. Regardless, I don't want to be in that group. The Bible also says to be without life is to be with God. In other words you and everyone else will go before God for judgment. I sure want Him to know me when that day comes along...

When your body stops functioning as a human being it is still a part of the universe and full of energetic little atoms with electrons spinning frantically around. Slowly, it goes through chemical processes and becomes part of the universe in different forms.

The thoughts that make up your soul are also energy. It too must become part of something else.
