he is probably foreign, or has foreign influence. Where I come from, we sometimes use that frase in the same manner as saying Miss, or Mrs. It is usually said in a less formal, but not totally informal setting and is used for someone who is still single (as opposed to madam, which is used for a married or oder women).

I think it may be more important to note his tonality and context. Was he joking, was he being sarcastic, was he being jovial, was he just trying to act a bit soffisticated? I guess the best thing would be not to read to much into it.

He's most likely trying to be nice, polite, and such. As your most likely aware, mademoiselle is really the same as madam or mam. You might even be able to say " my charming lady".

I imagine that he was just being polite. It's not like it's an insult or degrading, I don't see what the big deal is...

THat's what he likes to call you... simple as that! If you don't like it... tell him. He doesn't think there's anything wrong with it and he wont know if you don't like it unless you tell him.
