My family and I are going on a trip to China, and we've heard rumors that hotel ratings are different. Is this true? And how so?

Make sure that you know whether it's a hotel being rated or a hostel. A 4 star hostel is much worse than a 4 star hotel.

That being said, a 3-star hotel in Hong Kong had many more amenities that any Marriott or Sheraton I've stayed in the States and certainly was just as clean.

I don't know which city are you going to.
But the answer is yes. Actually world hotels put the stars individually, such as 7 star in Arabic nations.

The hotel in China, internet accessing is poor and slow, breakfast is less variety, the quality of the towel is low.etc.
5 stars in Beijin is ok, I think.
3 stars....it depends...

Also in Asia they may use 6 star ratings also, so read any reviews that a website may have. And the hotels rate themselves in Asia. Be careful.

Good luck

If you want a "OK hotel", don't choose less than 4 stars, which can be compared to a 2 stars++, european standards. Have a good trip anyway!!

the primary stars-marked hotel is three stars.
