Bramblerock has it wrong. "Thank you" is "Danke schön". There are too many English pop tunes out there who mispronounce "schön" as "shane" ("Danke schön", "Bei mir bist du schön" and so on), and I suspect that's where she heard the pronunciation. The Ö character (note the umlaut) represents a sound that does not exist in English--it's equivalent to the "eu" construction in French. As far as I can tell there is no word in German that transliterates to English "shane"--the German equivalent of our long A sound is represented by the Ä character, and so a German transliteration of "shane" would be something like "schän".

Goodbye is "Auf wiedersehen". In German the W is always pronounced like English V, and in "wiedersehen" the H is hardly aspirated at all.

The slang word for "goodbye" that Bramblerock refers to is actually spelled "Tschüß" or "Tschüss" (depending on whether you follow the German spelling reform of 1996). Note the umlaut on the U in both cases; the sound value of the vowel depends on whether the umlaut is present or not. Without it, German U is equivalent to English "oo"; with it, it is equivalent to French U.

Thank you is Danke schön, Schön Dank, or just danke...Good bye, depending where you are and who you are saying it to; auf Weidersehen, auf Weiderhören (on the telephone),Tschüs, Pferti, Pferti Gott, Bis Bald, Bis Später, Später, caio (I know this is Italian but is quite common here as well), Lebewohl.
