It's 18. The consequences of getting caught are pretty
tough.
If you are younger, make sure you have your fake ID on hand.

Tony is right about the drinking laws in Victoria. Kids can drink in a public bar or restaurant at the age of 16 if they are under their parents supervision and the parent has purchased the drink. They cannot purchase drinks themselves until they are 18. I have friends who buy their kids drinks when they are out. I don't personally think it is a good idea, but hey each to their own. Am not sure about the laws in the other states and there are not standardised rules for all states. I do know that Old and Tas allow kids to have a drivers lic at 17 where as Victoria you have to be 18.

In the state of Victoria the legal age for dinking in a licensed premises is 16, not 18.
You must be 18 to buy a drink - but an adult can buy you a drink when you're 16 and under that adult's care.

18, same as voting. Your an adult at 18 in Australia so you're entitled to all things that an adult is allowed to (but as mentioned above Victoria is slightly different)...as for driving with alcohol in you system it is not an age requirement, rather you must be on a full license, not a provisional one...... i think you can also drink in your own home with your parents under age however.

It's not so much to do with age as it does height. If you can see over the top of the bars in Australia you're allowed to drink!!

you cant legally drink or buy alcohol here in aus until your 18, and in most if not all states you aren't able to drive with it in your system until your 21, LEGALLY but if you want to brake laws go ahead but you better have a dam good reason when you get pulled over for an RBT (random breath test)

18 legally...I don't think I know too many people though that didn't have a few drinks before the legal age...Not encouraging it, just stating a fact. :)
