There are a multitude of reasons for this. They may go idle or log off because of something that's happened suddenly that they didn't have the time to explain or maybe didn't have the desire to explain to someone they only know online. As for away messages, I will sometimes go "invisible" or put up an away message when someone logs on that I don't feel like talking to at that particular time, but my close online friends who I am talking to at the time know the situation and know that I am not truly away. It seems kinder to put up an away or invisible message in this case than to send someone a text-message or response letting them know I do not wish to talk with them.

Yahoo messenger can be changed in preferences so that whoever is using can make it so it shows being idle and for how long; that is a default in the software. I have had some folks on messenger who lost their connection or the software acted up and it rebooted their computer, so some people don't do it on purpose. If someone I know is logged into messenger but has not contacted me, I post a away message for a reason, I'm usually with a client on messenger and they understand that and hopefully will respect it. I do agree that politeness goes a long way- a simple hey, I have to head on out but will be logged in- when that happens the default sets in on the software. Etiquette is hard to come by with messenger, half the time I don't even understand the "secret" codes users use; like idk, PO, PIR- I have no clue what those are. I know some like LOL as laugh out loud. My 2 cents- thank you for your time.

Any number of reasons... one of the kids is trying to kill the other one, the dog just chased the cat across the table, which contained dinner.. someone is pounding on the front door... the phone is ringing and it isnt where it was supposed to be so you are on a phone hunt.. something really cool just came on TV and you forgot you were chatting... their mother said "GET IN HERE RIGHT NOW"...

I always assume it is A: a connection problem or B. a (hopefully) minor emergency. At least I assume that until I learn for sure that the person I have been chatting with is a rude boor that thinks their time is so much more important than mine that it is perfectly ok for them to leave me hanging.

I have to agree with Glo. It's not like you're on the phone and they're hanging up on you. When you're not having a face-to-face conversation with someone, it's easy to forget that there are real people on the other end of the chat. So when they're ready to leave, they just do.
I don't understand though why people get so upset by this. It's not that big of a deal.

As I stated in one of your other questions it is a me me me society that has not been taught good manners or etiquette. To be honest I do not find it polite. (No offense to anyone) good night almost 12 A.M. Night night.

possibly because they may have had a break in your conversation which you were not shown. They may not have realized that you were in middle of a conversation.
