The best time to check for lumps is just after your period, while you are in the shower, with hands soapy so they will glide easily over your breast. You need to check under your arm also because lumps can be there. There is a normal ridge just under the nipple, more noticable when you are younger.
Also some people have normally thick/lumpy areas on their breasts so don't panic if you feel something lumpy. It's probably normal.
Some doctors have a silicone breast with lumps in it so you can learn what to except when checking yourself.
Most people that get breast cancer are over the age of 40, but it does happen to younger women and men too.

Yes, it happens often enough and is probably just whats called a breast bud (which is just an innocent swelling of the breast tissue). But if nothing else your friend is correct to have it checked by her gp because it will reassure her that things are ok.
