Basically, they are formats that came out separately back when different manufacturers were coming out with drives that would support either one or the other. Nowadays most drives will read either type. However, the consensus is that if you plan to use a DVD in a home DVD player, odds are a little better that the DVD-R discs will be more compatible.

Each type was designed by a different company [Sony Vs Sanyo, I think] to originally be used in their own company's player.
