I'm looking for a dog...my doggy of 13 years passed away. I would like a quiet dog preferably one that is cat-like in nature (quiet, independent, cuddly) My old dog was a sheltie, but she was raised around cats. I've heard that miniature collies (a sheltie bred with a collie...lots of new breeders and MANY of them in collie rescues) are very cat like and quiet. Does anyone know of any other breeds that are like this?

Look up the BASENJI they are a small, mid sized dog and they are known as the barkless dog. They are usually quite funny and little hams and they are quite clean , I believe they like to lick themselves like a cat, and they can yodell!!!!!

I have a chihuahua who is very much like a cat. We rescued her a few months ago and believe that she's around 3 years old or so. She's so quiet. My parents couldn't even believe how quiet she was when we took her down to visit them. All she ever wants to do is lay in our laps and cuddle with us. She sleeps a lot and when she does get a burst of energy she runs back and forth in the house with the cats. It's very cute because she's like half the size of them. She's the perfect little dog for cat lovers wanting to branch out a little but aren't sure if they're really ready for a dog.

Check out the rescues because each dog's temperment is different, regardless of breed.

I'm not trying to be snarky, but if you want cat-like, why not just get a cat?

When I first read the title question, the dog that came to mind was a Basenji. Lol. They are said to clean themselves like cats, trot like a horse and they don't have a normal bark.

Just some ideas.

I'm with the Basenji suggestion above.

I've had them before and they are like having a cat in a dog-suit. It's actually kinda wierd at first because you have to treat them like dogs, but they also have a LOT of cat-like tendencies.

They are INCREDIBLY intelligent and have an agility that's just amazing. Their faces are very expressive and there is little doubt what is on their minds - usually mischief. They can be little Houdinis if they decide that they want to go see something that's out of their reach. They can even climb up on top of bookshelves if that's where they feel like being. Like I said, it's wierd, but I love them.

Many of the Sighthounds are very feline, my Whippets definately are.

I grew up showing Shelties and a friend of mine breeds Collies, I don't see anything remotely feline about them, and QUIET??? I seriously doubt a Sheltie X Collie would be quiet!!!

BTW - Basenjis yodeling sounds like a loud death moan, it is a truly awful noise, JMO.

you should go to a good animal rescue place. if they are good they will know basically about the behavior of each dog and will be able to tell you how it acts. you might get a new dog and it will have a second chance!

maybe you should try a tibetan spaniel??? they are ver quiet and loyal breeds. Their initial job was to sit in the rafters in the moanstries of Tibe and wtach over their owners.

We have a poodle-Bichon mix who thinks she is a cat. We also have three cats and she behaves a lot like them. She doesn't bark very much but is very loving.
