its only on my thumb and can be very painful, it feels like i have really deep crack. what could be the cause

it's eczema. go to the drug store and try dermal therapy. i have the same thing on one thumb and now one finger too. My doc doesn't agree but i think it is brought on by stress. he says it's just dry skin but then i think it would be all over?

Really dry skin...Try NexCare Deep Crack Care...You can get it at any drugstore

There may be a splinter or prickle deep in the area that cracks.
