you probably overopened and hurt your joint, if this is first time happening - not a big deal, take muscle relaxer for a few days and stick with a soft food (don't overwork the joint) for a few days. But if it is not a first time and you catch yourself clinching teeth or grinding them you need a bite splint. Since you have no insurance go to the pharmacy and buy yourself one that you can fix at home (put in hot water than bite into it to shape for your mouth, pharmacist should recommend one), but the best of cause is one made by dentist custom made for you.

It sounds like TMJ. I had this a few years ago and my brother in law who is a dentist made me a biteguard that kept me from biting down all the way since TMJ is usually caused by clenching your jaw while sleeping or while you're on the computer, etc. Usually you don't even know you're doing it. If that's it, you could try to catch yourself clenching (hard to do when you're sleeping though) and try to relax your jaw.

I would suggest getting it checked out. while your waiting take an anti-inflamitory, like motrin. This might help whatever is causing the pressure to go away. However, see your family doctor and have it checked out. Have him refur you to an oral surgin, if your lucky, your medical insurance will pay for it anyway. I did the whole TMJ thing, my dental and medical went back and forth on who would pay for it, but medical did end up footing the bill.

You might have TMJ.. which is basically lock jaw.... My mom has TMJ and i had it when i got my braces. But when my braces were taken off it stopped. TMJ can be severe sometimes.... It sounds like that's what you have. If my mom opens her mouth too wide you can hear a pop and she feels a bit of pain........
