Essentially the symptoms can be anything depending on the exposure

That's fairly vague... there's necrotizing fasciitis, which is definitely horrible and may result from a minor injury or an injury that doesn't even break the skin...
If you get a bacteria introduced by an injury into the bloodstream, you may get a toxic reaction...
