Depends on what is being done to be helpful.
If you are a Christian, you can let God shine through your deeds or give Him the credit for what you did.
Admit without God, you can do nothing apart from Him.

Be grateful for the chance to help someone. Take pride in your helpfulness but do not boast of it.
Thank God in secret for Him putting you in that position of servitude.
Jesus was a servant.
Do unto others as you would have them do to you.
God puts you/me in circumstances to test us.
There are no coincidences in life.

You can be helpful but only through God allowing you to be so.
If God hadn't created me, I wouldnt be here to help with anything.
Without Gods grace and free gift of Salvation, I would be given over to my own thoughts and desires and would not know the very one who created me.
So, when I do what Gods word tells me to do, I am honoring and glorifying and pleasing God. If someone thanks me for doing this, I simply state thank you, God truely helped both of us today.

Do it anonymously. Do it and never say anything about it. Pay a bill or buy food and leave it on the doorstep. Cut someones yard and never say anything.

Do the task and disappear into the background, and never say anything about it.
