I put an empty stainless steel pot on the stove and now its all stained (the hob was on at the time) with smoke or something. A half hearted scrub with some steel wool has not worked. Any ideas??

I burnt my stainless steel wok, soaked it in washing up liquid for a couple of days. No joy. Added household cleaner. Still no luck. Even boiled washing up liquid & water in it.

Then my sister in law came to the rescue & told me to soak it in biological washing powder & water, boiling the mix if necessary.

It worked!

Soaked it overnight & then just scrubbed it with the green bristly side of a washing up sponge.

Good luck with yours.

If it is truly stainless steel it will be "fixable" with a little care. Don't use the steel wool except as a last resort. Try a nonscratching nylon scrubber and try some ordinary baking soda to scrub. Then try a gentle cleanse like Bon Ami.

If none of those work, buy a stainless cleaner from a culinary shop or try a product like Awesome Cleaner. You might also speak with a professional cook for more tips.

If this is a cheap pot and not really stainless steel of a good quality it may well be ruined, though.

I've almost killed pans before. Soak in hot water with dishsoap overnight. Scrub with a green scrubbie. Soak again the same way. Scrub again. Sooner or later you'll get it clean.

I use ketchup on my copper pots. Maybe it will work for you on your stainless. If not, maybe you should throw it out and start over with a new one.
