Depends what you want out of life. Never having lived in the US, I wouldn't be able to give you a comparison from my own point of view, but my sister and brother-in-law came home from Washington DC before starting a family. Education is much cheaper (technically free, 'till you hit tertiary), so is healthcare (free? I don't think so!!). You may find a certain amount of anti-American sentiment, due to your government's foreign policies, but every country has its bigots - most of us are pretty tolerant. If you like the outdoors, we have plenty of it, and everywhere's less than a day's drive from the sea. Cold? I live in Auckland - we seldom get frosts, and it never snows here. Yes, it rains, but we don't get winds like Wellington (think Chicago!), so invest in an umbrella. We hold summer over the Christmas period, which seems eminently sensible for family gatherings - you're not trapped inside with hyperactive kids! We're not quite paradise on Earth, but I love my country, and welcome anyone who wants to try life here. Haere mai (usually translated as "welcome", also means "come here") and kia ora! (A Maori phrase used in greeting, conveying wishes of good health.)

To live, as in set down permanent roots, it depends on what you're looking for. New Zealand is great if you don't mind the cold and rain The north of the north island is nice in Summer though because it gets warm. The people are friendly and the food is great. You don't have to worry about terrorism or nuclear threat etc. Besides the employment problem and a few social issues as in any country, ie drugs, it's a nice place. There's enough to see and do to keep you interested. Besides, if you want more excitement, take a holiday somewhere else.

Having travelled through the USA from east to west, I got totally p*ssed off with all the hassles I had with security. There's a healthy dose of paranoia everywhere. I was forever having to take off my shoes, take off my belt, empty my backpack - frustrating as all hell. When I arrived at the airport, it was like, 'Welcome to the United States. Place your fingers here for fingerprinting and stand here so we can take your photo.' It was like being guilty of something and having a police record made before committing a crime. That was just getting in, then there was all the other crap on top of it.

Both have good points and bad points. I'd choose the USA simply because NZ is often too cold and wet for me. But I'd take heaps of holidays to NZ if I had to choose.

New Zealand any day.... nice people amd have a country that measures success and wealth on how it is going socially not just on the big business and international weight....it actually has a system for social welfare, proper free healthcare, better women's rights (a female prime minister) etc......however, job wise it is better to head across the Tasman to Australia as a lot of Kiwi's do.....very laid back place like it's Aussies cousins.

It all depends what you want in life..
USA is so big and you can get a wide variety of lifestyle (social, climatic etc)
New Zealand appears to be permanently cold.

There is no greater place to live than in the United States.

Where else could you find the New York Mets baseball, the Chicago Bears football, The New York Rangers hockey and Wrestlemania!
