I don't know the proper way. Like, is it left or right shoulder first, and stuff like that?

Doing the sign of the cross is a superstitious ritual that has no basis in Scripture. There is no proper way to do it.

Catholic (Roman) is usually left to right sholder. Anglicans can do it several ways, mostly roman though. Eastern Orthodox do it right to left.
