Is there anything I can put there other than carpet to help stop her from falling? She is a cockapoo and is blind in one eye, so it could be the depth perception or all of the fur. She was shaved last week and is still falling down, so I don't think it's the fur. Or she could just be an idiot. She's not the smartest dog in the world but I still love her. I don't want her to get hurt, but my mother doesn't want carpet on the stairs and we can't isolate her on the first floor either. Any ideas?

There are a number of different things that you can do to stop this. If you cant' watch her at all times and you dont' want her to have total free roam there are indoor pens that look a lot like the kind that you get for babies. Or if the roaming is not a concern there are gates that you can get that are collapsible that goes right in doorways. The pens are about $74 and the gates rage from $25 to $110. Good luck!!

Well, it's not that she's an idiot. Her balance was completely thrown off the second she went blind in that eye. being blind in both eyes is one thing, but just imagine walking around with one eye working... my father is blind in his left eye, and he said that for the first 5 years, he had alot of adjustments to make cause it was extremely difficult for him (it happened when he was 9). I know you don't like the idea of isolating her, but when you're not home, it might be a good idea. And if she's not too old, you could try and train her to wait for you from the top of the stairs so you can walk her down (ensuring her safety). My old dog used to wait for us to go upstairs, so you never know, it could work... best of luck!

Is a cockapoo a small dog? I'm not trying to be rude at all but seriously, it's going to be better for the well being of the dog to just not allow her upstairs unless you have taken her up and are going to carry her down. She may not like it at first but she will adjust. Her constant falling might be a neurological problem... get a vet check.
BTW... they make puppy gates at any big chain pet store that you can open like a door instead of having to hassle with those child gates and having to step over them or hassle with readjusting it.

Help her down the stairs. Or go to a vet. Your dog might have a leg infection, causing her to fall.

why cant you keep her downstairs...i had a friend that had one bum eye and she had zero depth perception...she can not even get a drivers license....well if you absolutly can not keep her on the first floor i would keep her upstair only get a baby gate and put it up so she can not go down ...and carry her down and walk her as needed

i would probably jsut carrying her down the stairs when she wants to go down them...or if you want to protect her from trying to go down, put up a doggy gate. and only let her down them if you carry her down. If your all upstairs put the gate up or during the night. if your downstairs let her downstairs where you are. It will keep her safe, so she won't injury herself more. Goodluck!

Upstairs dog: Block the stairway
Downstairs dog: Block the entrance
Both: Help the dog, if its small carry it, if its big, stay behind it and if it starts to fall, help it up.

All great ideas from our community here @ 'Answers'. However I might take her to the vet to rule out any serious problems....like something neurological.
