One thing that works better than cough drops is a family home remedy that we use.....

take about 3 tablespoons of honey and 1 to 1 1/2 teaspoons of apple cider vinegar. Mix them together real well. You can either take this mixture just like this or you can add it to an 8 ounce glass of water and drink it down.

It not only will take care of the cough, but it will also fight the cold and give you more energy. You can take one of these mixes every 3 hours or so. I found that if you do one about 1/2 an hour before bed it also helps you to get sleep.

Good luck and feel better soon.

Actually cough drops are mostly just pectin, which really is nothing more than sugar. One of the best otc cough medicines is Delsym and it's just for cough and lasts 12 hours. You can get it at almost any drugstore. Also if your cough gets worse at night, which most often do, you could take benedryl or a similar antihistmine which would help with two things. One, it would help dry up any phlegm that might be running down the back of your throat causing you to cough and two it usually makes you drowsy therefore relaxing you and helping you not to cough.

Good luck and at night in bed, remember to try to sleep as upright as possible and perhaps run a dehumidifier. Also stronger than cough drops are sucrets.

apparently, you shouldn't do anything to prevent coughing, i was told by a doctor. it's the body's way of expelling all the muck that builds up during a cold and helps keep the lungs clear. the only thing you really can do is take paracetemol, tylenol etc as they are quite effective for the symptoms of cold.

Take long, hot, steamy showers. If you have a massaging head in your shower, turn it on, full blast....and let it pound on your back and chest. That will loosen things up.

When you sleep at night, try propping your chest up a bit. Use several pillows, or even sleep in a recliner chair.

Sip on some hot liquids: tea, lemonade, cider.

Don't eat or drink any dairy products until your cough is gone.

Gargle with salt that has a little water in it. lol not that much but there shuold be a good amount of salt in there. Ice cream also helps the throat for a little while, and is a good thing to counter-act the saltwater.
*Gargle the salty water for atleast 1 minute. This is an old-school remedy that my mom tought me.
