The ideal solution is to have a friend who has an office or home along the route.

There's not much generally in NYC that's cheap these days, and rooms along the parade route will be at a premium. Check Kayak.com, which digs deep into the Internet, or Priceline if you need a room. Rooms in nearby New Jersey, or Brooklyn or Queens will be less expensive if you need a place to sleep.

Otherwise, come into the city early that day and camp out from your selected location. That will be the only way you'll be assured of a prime viewing spot.

The issue you will have with the parade is that its starts Quite Early, and to get a good spot you must be on the route even earlier, some folks start at 4 AM, with no place to go to the bathroom.
Its also Very Cold on late November mornings, Frost is a real problem that early in the morning.
Central Park West, Columbus Circle, Times Square, Herald Square, all very expensive places to stay.

No hotels in NYC are cheap unless it is a flop house (you don't want to go there) Also it can be very cold in NY at that time of the year. The streets along the parade route ar a pick pockets dream. Your best bet is to stay in and watch it on TV.

Just had to say that the "muggers galore" comment is a total BS comment -- there are cops all over the place and no muggings that I have heard off. Crime is way down in NYC and any muggers aren't going to mug people on the parade route with all those people, cops, television cameras, camera phones, video cams. Stupid comments about NYC like that are extremmely annoying ! The ahole who made that comment lives in the "metro area" i.e not a real New Yorker and probably hasn't been to the city in ten years if ever.

I will share what we did last year with you...We put on some appropriate & comfy clothes, put our favorite beverage in a can cooler, claimed our spot for the best viewing....right in front of our 62" wide screen TV. Doesn't get any better than that...all the comforts of home and life size floats!

What Hambo says is the best. I live in the metro area. Everyone I know from here just watches it on TV. It is so crowded and cold with hardly any vantage spots. Muggers galore, as well...I don't think it's worth it.
