From Rhode Island, there is Amtrak for rail, or Greyhound and Peter Pan for bus.

You can also take the ferry to Long Island and take Long Island Railroad from there, but it's not a particularly efficient way to go.

Amtrak will take you from Providence Station to Penn Station at Madison Square Garden. Bit pricey. You can also take Greyhound and get off at Port Authority at 42nd St. Subway system doesn't start until you reach the Bronx. If you have a car take 95 South all the way, right into the Big Apple.
