Go to the website of the airline you plan to fly on. All of them have customer information pages that answer these types of questions. If you are making your travel plans through a travel agent, they can also answer all of your questions.

You should arrive to the Airport an hr before your actual flight. You can bring 1 bag onboard (i.e. purse, backpack) and of course your luggages, which will be placed in the cargo hold. It has certain policy in how much your luggage may weigh. Forget how much it was. If the weight goes over you'll have to pay extra $$$, but it's not too much. Your luggages will automatically be transferred to your next destination. Airport staff will know by checking the "tags" on your bags. Other than that, keep an eye on your belongings and NEVER accept packages from strangers. Have a safe trip!! Don't forget to take your U.S. Passport and don't loose that.

You will need to check your ticket and make sure you are at the airport with plenty of time to check in. First off you go to the check-in counter, they will check your ticket and weigh your bags. If they are over weight you will have to pay extra. They label and take your bags to load on the plane, then you wait until your flight is called. Hand luggage is kept in a compartment above your seat in the plane, don't forget it & leave it behind. Your bags should follow you faithfully around the world, but I have heard of luggage getting lost, label it clearly and use locks on the zips. If the lock gets brocken don't touch the bag until security is there as someone may have filled it with pot like what happened to Schappalle Corby in Bali.
My husband just returned from a trip to the UK from Australia and he had no problems at all. He flew with United Arab Emirates and had a stop over in Dubia. His luggage followed him when he changed planes. Most staff are understanding of first time flyers and should do what they can to reasure you and make you feel comfortable.
I hope you enjoy your flight and have a safe and happy trip.

your lugage will be checked through so you will not have to worry about that. get to the airport about 2 to 3 hours early so you have enough time. when you get to the tsa check point remove any computers you have in your checked bag. If you are bringing any liquids make sure they are in a quart sized ziplock bag and you take them out of your carry on so it goes through the x-ray by it self you will have to take off all shoes so make sure you have socks on, you will also have to take off jackets. fyi your cellphone has mettal in it so take that out of your pocket also remove your belt hair clips, but rings can stay on. that is about it
