With windows XP you just click on it and it will ask you where to extract it to. A Zip file is a file compressed for a smaller file transfer and often the zip files contain multiple files.
If you don't have XP, you will need something like winzip to extract the files. You can find it at www.download.com.

Well, congrats on at least downloading something successfuly.
A "zip" file is one that has been compressed into a smaller byte size than it was originally. Think of it this way....suppose you took a kitchen sponge and got it soaking wet. Then you placed a heavy weight on it and let it dry while it was under that weight. When you remove the weight, the sponge is going to be much smaller in physical size. So, you pack that in your pocket, go to a friend's house, and she asks you for help to clean her sink. You whip out your flattened sponge, run water over it, and before you know it, it's back to its original size and you can use it. That's an analogy of what a zip file is...a file that's been compressed to make it smaller, and which has to be uncompressed to make it work again.
Now, to deal with a zip file you'll need a program to "un-zip" it. A free one can be found at the below link which will do the job for you. Just download it and install the program.
One word of caution...depending on where you got that zip file, you want to scan it with your anti-virus scanner first, before you un-zip it. Many viruses are sent in a zipped file, so do scan it before you do anything with it.
Hope this helps,

go to www.winzip.com and download the demo program, install it and you can open it. zip it's a program that compress information to make one archive that maybe had many archives inside, the archive it's more smaller and more easy to copy and share. with the program you can creat your own zip, i.e. maybe you want to back up your old word documents, you select all this archives, right click on mouse, add to zip and ready you put those documents in one archive that it's more smaller that the originals. delete the word docs and release space on your hdd

it is a group of files that are made smaller (compressed) so they can be sent via email or over the net, winzip take the files and make the big again ( kinda like magic or adding water to a dry sponge lol)
