OK, at our weekly church dinner, this older woman who is very......"eccentric" sits at our table.
Surprisingly, we all had a good time. I'm starting to think, "OK, maybe the "crazy church lady" isn't so bad..
Then, as I pass her later to get back to the table, she says loudly, "HAVE YOU GAINED WEIGHT??"
I go, "Have I?"
She calls, "ISN'T IT TRUE??"
At one time I was a size 10/12. Now I'm size 14. 5'9". 3 kids. Sue me.
First: What should I have replied?
Second: It's not like I'm fat! Am I? I thought that's, like, you know, NORMAL!

Just smile and tell her thanks, I think I look good too. 5'9 at size 14 is a very nice size. It is not fat, it is a good size for a woman your height. Any less and you would be a stick. Curves become a woman. You go ahead and flaunt what your mamma gave you, girlfriend.

Like you said she seems a little off. I would of said the same thing you did or even why yes you noticed and just smile. I'm sure the moment she said it and you responded she moved on to another thought. Don't be harsh with her. We need to give our elderly people and those that are a little off in the mind some room for the weird stuff with out getting offended. It's part of life and being a good neighbor so to speak. Your not fat and you know that. I think it's great your as small as you are after 2 kids. We can't let a small comment or question change what we know in our hearts and mind. Good luck and I hope you will always reach out to that lady.

Maybe this woman does have a problem that she cannot solve. Maybe something is weighing her down like the fear of death--enough that she has become eccentric in an effort to cope. If she has, she is probably tired and wants someone else to carry it.

I would've said that's what three kids does to you. And no, you're not fat. Society has a way of making us all think we need to be 5'9 and 125 pounds. There's nothing healthy about that. You're just fine, especially after three kids!!

Well you did say she was "older" and very "eccentric"..you were surprised you had a good time in her presence, you really think after all said and done she was really trying to purposely hurt you? May have been inappropriate (as far as you are concerned), but why it bothers you so much is a whole different issue. And a size 14 is not exactly small.

Next time you are at dinner, slip some Valium in her drink. It will work a treat.

P.S - you don't sound fat - especially if you have had 3 kids!

It's a pretty average size, plus you're pretty tall.
I would have said "Yep, plus a few gray hairs. Why do you ask? Is it important to you?" Sometimes, even in church, a smart-butted reply is needed.

it seems alot of church people have to try to prove how good they are by trying to cut down others. it makes them feel that they are covered for things they have done in the past , drinking ,gay sex ect. and that is why alot of them do such much like a grade school kid showing off but they do it to cover their past.

"Why is it important for you to know that" is a perfectly appropriate response to such a rude comment.

That is a very polite way of saying "that is none of your business, you busy body and I resent your rudeness"

I love old people who tell the truth. You could have just answered - Thanks for noticing! That's what having kids does to you!
