I've been getting in shape my self eating a low fat medium carb diet and working out. I would really love my wife to lose a few pounds since she's about 30-40 lbs over the 120lbs weight she was when I met her, and I fear she'll get as big as her mom. Of course when I mention anything to her about working out or diets it seems to have a negative effect, even when I mention the health benefits. She will go on the atkins because she say's it's the only one she likes...however, I keep telling her it's not sustainable. In fact she's evidence that it's not. All I want is for her to work out with me or at least make an effort. Any suggestions?

Outside of telling her of the health risks, she'll have to make the choice herself. I became diabetic because I didn't listen to others, if that helps. Have her email me and I'll do my best to convince her of the health benefits of a healthy diet and exercise plan. It would be better if she wanted to start now and stay healthy, rather than having to diet and exercise just to stay alive. Get my meaning?

Take baby steps. If working out is too much of a leap for her, then start out with fun recreational activities that involve movements. You can even incorporate them in your daily routine and other chores, that way she can't avoid them. Try buying your groceries at a quicker pace, for example. Reduce TV time and computer time and other activities involving sitting around and staying put. Make your activities fun as well. Every now and then you can make a bet, say, the loser will have to do a task. Even the winner may have to do a task, albeit lighter. Remember, rewards are always good motivation.

Once her body gets used to moving around, then you can up the energy level. You would have to do this in stages until you can get her to finally work out with you, or maybe even more. You may have to hide your intentions in the beginning.

Food obviously will play a big part. I always say moderation. You can'y taboo sweets and burgers and other good food. That will only turn her off. Just eat more healthy food.

Instead of nagging her to lose weight, treat her to a gym membership. Cook her a healthy low-cal meal and show her the recipe so she can fix it next time. Don't focus on her size, reinstate the health benefits of heathly food and exercise. I'm guessing that she's probably quite aware of her weight gain, and it's effected her self esteem. Be supportive and lead her along the way.

Why don't you just take her for a walk with you. Walk a little farther each time and increase the number of days as you progress.

Start with one day a week....make it fun with good conversation. Then the next time make it two days a week...keeping the conversation fun (make her laugh about something funny while you are walking). Tell her you hopes and dreams for the future, ask her what hers are. Take this time to share.. don't talk about weight and health.

Before long she may really enjoy spending that time with you and come looking for you to go on your walks.

Good luck!

Be the way.. she may be just as worried as you are that she is becoming her mom.

you need to focus on whats really important. look on the inside instead of the outside. If you really love her, the extra 30-40 pounds should not even matter you to. GET A LIFE~!!

If you keep nagging her about it, she will never want to do it. You sound like a know-it-all that likes to talk down to her.
If you want to help, slowly replace chips and cookies in the house with fruits, veggies and other good snacks. Cook dinner more often and only serve low fat meals.

You ever thought it can be genetic since her mom is big too. But if you just be sensitive and let her get on board at her own pace. But if you keep hammering her to diet she may start to feel insecure and turn to the food for comfort. take it easy on her.

Instead of mentioning it like you want her to lose weight put it to her that you would like to have her exercise with you for the extra time together alone.

UNTIL SHE'S READY TO MAKE THE COMMITMENT TO LOSE WEIGHT, IT WILL NEVER HAPPEN. APPARENTLY HE MOM IS VERY HEAVY. I DON'T KNOW WHY PEOPLE FEEL THAT LIKE MOTHER, LIKE DAUGHTER. IT DOES'T HAVE TO BE THAT WAY. I WOULDN'T QUIT ASKING HER THOUGH. IT'S ALWAYS WORTH A TRY. EVER CONSIDER A BRIBE?
