you can soften it by placing a cup of sugar in a covered dish in the microwave and heating for 30 seconds or so. You may need to heat it more than once, but watch to see that it doesn’t start to melt. You can also heat the brown sugar on a metal pan in a regular oven at 250°F (120°C) for five minutes or so.
To keep it from hardening in the first place, store it in the freezer.

Spinkle a piece of bread with water but don't soak it.
Put the moistened bread dry side down on top of the brown sugar in a sealed container and put it aside until tomorrow.
You will have nice soft brown sugar and the bread will still be good.

My mother swears by this...AND IT WORKS!!!!
When you have hard brown sugar, place a piece (small piece is all that's needed...like 1/4 of a slice) of bread in with it... Leave it over night and it will be fine in the morning. If you want, leave the bread in it so it will keep it that way. Change it every now and then once it's dried out.

If you need it right now throw it in the Microwave for about 30 seconds. If for later like tomorrow a slice of bread does the trick. You goin to put that on toast?

Stick a slice of fresh bread in the bag with it and seal it up overnight. Shoudl be soft by morning.
If you absolutely have to use it tonight, you may try nuking it to soften, put in a sturdy zipper bag, then beat w/ a hammer.
