Walking if an effective way to:
see the world each morning, in a good light, which will put you into a happy mood;
hike up your metabolism, digest your meals, get the oxygen flowing from your lungs into yr bloodstream;
increase your fitness from the ground up, as it were.
Also, you get to see your neighbours, notice news in the neighbourhood, feel the fresh breeze on your face
and
feel every fibre of your being , from the soles of your feet to the top of your head.
Now, if you happen to lose a pound or two, that's a bonus.

You are on a good regime. The trick is keeping it up. Some weights can stress upper body muscles more and any muscle use burns calories. After a few weeks of your routine, especially if you are SLOWLY increasing the distance you run, your body will figure out that you really are going to need energy when you start out. The command will go from the brain to "release the grease". Now when that happens you will be burning the fat your body has stored for just such an occasion. Also, when that happens you will start noticing weight loss, assuming you maintain or reduce your current intake of calories.
Just keep on doing what you are doing. I would look at a running increase of about 50 yards every week. That will put you at a mile about 5 weeks after your first increase, if you feel good, and can increase your distance faster so much the better. Just don't stress your body into a burnout mode and give it up. The old line about "no pain, no gain" is just fine until you find yourself in the hospital. Keep the recovery "pain/discomfort" to a minimum.
I always felt that if I exercised in the afternoon I should feel a twinge of stiffness and discomfort when I got up the next morning. Then with a hot morning shower, a shave, breakfast and a walk to the car should work it all out. If I felt no twinge, I worked harder that day, if I was still feeling it on the drive to work; I would slow down a tad.
Good luck on your quest, it sounds like you have a good start and could probably do just fine without my help but now you have no excuses at all. LOL.

Healthy Weight Loss : Start right away
In order to consistently keep your weight under control, it is advisable to walk about 10,000 steps daily. It is the easiest activity among all the exercise programs and does not involve stress to the body. Apart from the activity of walking, a systematic dietary pattern should be followed so that you are always free from the obesity symptoms.
Generally people, who are overweight, are usually not interested in physical activities. They prefer doing any type of work but without moving from one place to another. They usually enjoy watching TV and having something to eat. For this category, fixing a program like aerobics or floor exercises would require great efforts. Therefore walking is the most recommended form of exercise. For the beginners it is ideal to walk for 15-20 minutes daily. Gradually, the time can be extended daily until they are capable of walking 60 minutes a day.
When the doctors prescribe pills for the patients, they advice the patients to spend some time walking around. The tablets are effective only when combined with the healthy dietary patterns and a daily exercise activity. Losing weight is a difficult task, and people who are disciplined and take exercise seriously, would lose weight. So take your exercise activity seriously and be active throughout the day.

Yes walking even a short distance for 15-25 minutes is effective in losing weight. But you also have to remember that exercising also opens up your appetite. So no matter how much or how little you're exercising/walking, you need to watch what you eat.
I'm not a doctor or dietician or by any means an expert, but I know that if you go for a walk and you come home only to eat McD's, any fast food or fatty foods you defeat the exercise and all the work you're doing.
Try to eat healthy and cut back on sweets and junk. Watch your food intake. My opinion is, you may not have to cut everything you like, just eat in moderation. And more meals a day , fruits , snacks, nuts in between meals so you don't go starving half the day, and try to stuff yourself later.

Yes. Least strenuous and doable for most, regardless of age. Wear ankle weights. Walk with a friend. You don't pay attention to how much you are walking and talkimg burns some calories. Win, win.

you could use hand weights or ankle wieghts, I use my own body resistance. I walk in areas with hills and varying terrain. I swing my arms and twist my waist at intervals. I have been walking for fitness for 2 years and have found it to be a very effective workout.
